Are you getting married? In Ontario, you must have a marriage license to legally start your new life together.

Schedule an appointment for a marriage licence
  • There are no gender, residency, citizenship or medical requirements when applying for a marriage licence.
  • Anyone over the age of 16 years old can get married in Ontario.

If you are under 18 years old, you will need written consent from all of your parents or legal guardians. All parents or legal guardians must complete the Consent of Parents or Guardians to Marriage Form when they go to obtain the marriage licence from the municipality. Contact the Clerk’s Office to receive a consent form if you are under 18 years of age.

In order to apply for a marriage licence, you must schedule an appointment with the Clerk. While it is recommended that both partners be present at the appointment, it is not required.

Once issued, the marriage licence will be valid for 90 days and anywhere in Ontario.

 

What to bring at your appointment

1. A completed marriage licence application.

2. Two pieces of government-issued identification for each person getting married. At least one piece of identification for each person getting married must include their photo. Examples of government-issued identification include:

  • government-issued birth certificate, including any change of name certificates
  • valid passport · record of immigrant landing
  • Canadian Citizenship Card or Certificate
  • valid driver’s licence
  • valid Ontario Photo Card

3. Supporting documentation (for example: proof of divorce, if applicable).
If you are planning to remarry, please visit the Service Ontario Website for further information. No documentation is required for widowed partners.

4. Have at least one of you attend in-person to pick up the licence.

5. Payment: Please note that the Municipality only accepts cash or debit.

Marriage Solemnization

We offer civil wedding ceremony services.

Our ceremonies, available in French and/or English, are simple yet dignified. They can be held at The Nation’s Town Hall or a location of your choice.

Request a civil marriage ceremony

1. Ceremonies will be conducted at Town Hall – 958 Route 500 West in Casselman during regular office hours. Exceptions may be granted outside office hours in an appropriate location approved by the Clerk, subject to availability.

2. A standard civil marriage ceremony shall incorporate all mandatory declarations under Section 24 of the Marriage Act in all civil marriages. Personal vows, in addition to the mandatory declarations, will be permitted.

3. A mandatory pre-ceremony meeting, which will last approximately 30 minutes, must be scheduled at least three (3) days prior to the ceremony. Both parties must attend this pre-ceremony meeting, and shall provide:

  • photo identification (i.e.: driver’s license);
  • a completed application for a Civil Marriage Ceremony;
  • a written copy of personal vows, if any; and
  • a valid Marriage License issued in the Province of Ontario is to be presented (date issued must be within 90 days of ceremony).

4. The Clerk or designate has the authority to refuse to solemnize the civil marriage of any person based on what he or she knows or has reasonable grounds to believe, lacks mental capacity to marry by reason of being under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs or for any other reason.

5. The persons being married must have two (2) witnesses present during the ceremony. Witnesses must be 14 years of age or older and should be able to understand and appreciate what is taking place and be able to give evidence of such at a later date, if required.

6. The persons being married must supply an interpreter if they do not speak English or French, or require assistance, if the Marriage Officiant deems it necessary. The interpreter cannot be one of the witnesses.

7. A maximum of 15 guests (including the wedding party) can be accommodated in the venue at Town Hall.

8. In the Town Hall venue, minimal decorations are permitted (flowers, balloons). They may be placed 15 minutes prior to the Ceremony and removed within 15 minutes of its conclusion. Use of decorations affixed to walls or furniture (tape, staples, nails, etc.) are not allowed. No confetti, rice, bubbles, etc., are permitted.

9. Music will be permitted at certain times throughout the Ceremony but must be determined during the pre-ceremony meeting. When selecting the type of music, consideration should be given to its appropriateness and contribution to the dignity of the occasion.

10. The taking of photographs and videotaping of the Ceremony will be permitted subject to certain limitation at the discretion of the Marriage Officiant.

For Services Provided Outside of City Hall
11. If the ceremony takes place in an approved venue other than Town Hall, it is the responsibility of the persons being married to make the appropriate arrangements and to pay for the facility.

Fees: $350

  • Full payment must be made no later than one week before the ceremony.
  • A $50 administrative fee will be retained in the event of cancellation before the scheduled date and time. No refunds will be provided for cancellations made less than 48 hours before the ceremony, if the applicants fail to appear, or if the officiant cancels due to the couple’s lateness.
  • Please note that the Municipality only accepts cash or debit.

 

Additional Options

  • Ceremony rehearsal: $50
  • Witnesses provided by The Nation: $25 per witness.
