Municipal Drains

Purpose of Municipal Drains

Municipal drains have supported rural Ontario since the 1800s, originally built to improve drainage for agricultural land. Today, they also manage excess water from roadside ditches, residential properties, churches, schools, and commercial or industrial lands in rural areas. These drains are essential to preventing flooding, protecting farmland, and supporting public health.

Once built under by-law, a municipal drain becomes part of the municipality’s infrastructure. The drainage superintendent is responsible for its maintenance and repair. Municipalities may be liable for damages if drains are not properly maintained.

Landowners assessed on a municipal drain may request maintenance, including cleaning or removal of debris or blockages such as beaver dams.
